In Aaron Frale's Time Agency, one character finds himself running through a subway tunnel, trying to beat the oncoming train to the station. This could be close .... The train effects consist of several layers and a ton of time shifting and mixing to get the intensity of the effects but keep the narration clear.

Is it just me or is it gettin' a little dramatic in here?

The opening credits and intro to Chapter 1 of Leroy Clary's "Dragon! Book 2: Revenge." All the music and effects in the books I produce are created here at my studio. Which reminds me, I need a name for this place. "The Lake Stevens Dramatic Reading and Chamber Orchestra Society Clubhouse?" hmmmm .... there may be a reason I'm not a fiction author .....

"Dragon! Book 1: Stealing The Egg" is a marvelous bit of fantasy by Leroy Clary. Our hero, Gareth, has many adventures, all driven by vague feelings and whispers he gets in his sleep -- he calls them The Night Whispers. In this climactic chapter, he suddenly can hear The Night Whispers during the day, and very loudly. The author described the voice as "booming, echoing, and rattling inside his head. It was too "loud." This presents all sorts of challenges considering we still need to make the character intelligible AND the "volume change" had to survive ACX's audio processing. The voice has been run through about eight processing and synthesizing modules, and the volume change (which you won't hear in this sample) was managed by changing the density of the sound rather than the volume. Midway through the process I had to laugh when I realized that if we were trying to do this back in the analog days, we would have had to rent about $30,000 worth of equipment. I've created all sorts of robot, computer, monster, etc. voices for the various sci-fi and fantasy books I've done.

Accents. Accents everywhere ....

The Time Stone Trilogy is a 40+ hour sci-fi action adventure (dare we call it space opera?) heavily laden with special effects and filled with dozens of characters with accents including Midwest, Deep South, New York, a few flavors of English, Irish, Australian, French, Italian, German, Swedish, and even Filipino. In this scene, the hero, Jim and a few of the veterans of the previous book's battles, are frustrated by the rest of the galaxy's failure to take them seriously as an armed force in the looming war. (Scene lightly edited for time)

"3V" Interview - The Time Stone - Count The Characters

Performance Notes
When the author approached me with this scene, another narrator had said, "It's impossible!" It turns out it wasn't. There are about 15 characters jammed into a few minutes, in multiple audio environments. Our hero, Jim Young, has found himself instantly transported not only 2000 years into the future, but to another planet where humans have taken refuge after the death of Old Earth. He is immediately a media sensation and extraordinarily wealthy thanks to his collection of "Old Earth antiquities", i.e. his recycling. This sample is just a part of his first "3V" interview -- he is being interviewed by Carl Nagel, slightly pompous and even more fawning reporter, while guests appear holographically next to him, his team of financial, scientific, and legal advisors whisper advice in his earpiece, and his 11 year old son Colin cheers him on. The author wanted to a create a fast-paced, high pressure environment. In the course of the show, Jim founds two businesses and probably makes several million more dollars! Blame any continuity errors on me, not the author, I had to do some snipping to fit this into 5 minutes. Blame the news show theme music on me, too.

That radio failed as a practical appliance when it proved to only receive high-power stations that were less than one city block away. This modest beginning blossomed into a 25 year career as a broadcaster where he did a bit of everything from being a DJ to serving as a vice president and general manager with Westinghouse Broadcasting (now CBS/Infinity.) Along the way he wrote and produced thousands of hours of everything from radio commercials to custom music and jingle packages. By 1989 he owned his own stations in Bend, Oregon, which afforded him abundant opportunities to, among other things, repair those stations, often in the middle of the night in a snowstorm. In 1992, Burnette left the radio business behind and took to traveling the world designing and delivering experiential learning seminars on leadership, management, communications, and building relationships. He has trained people across the US and in Indonesia, Hong Kong, China, Taiwan, Mexico, Finland, Greece, Austria, Spain, Italy, and Russia. In addition to his public and corporate trainings, he has been a National Ski Patroller, a Certified Professional Ski Instructor, a Certified In-Line Skating Instructor, a big-rig driving instructor, and a Certified Firewalking Instructor. (Yes, he can actually teach you how to walk on fire.) Michael has delivered over 200 hours of finished audiobooks to the ACX platform. He is the author and narrator of: The Fast Track to Your Technician Class Ham Radio License The Fast Track to Your General Class Ham Radio License The Independent Author's Guide to Successful Audiobook Production These days he makes his home in the Seattle, WA area with his wife, Kerry, who assists with editing and proofing and provides voices for some of their audiobooks.
