Performance Notes
For boys and girls growing up playing baseball in the 50s and 60s, one player stood out above all others - Mickey Mantle. Millions of kids copied his batting stance, ran the bases like he did, and pretended to be him on the sandlot, schoolyards, and Little League fields all across the country. But for one young boy that fantasy went far beyond just pretending and believing - convincing himself that indeed, he was, Mickey Mantle. My Name Was Mickey Mantle is a coming-of-age story highlighting the naivety of youth, the trials and tribulations in growing up, and the realization that our bigger-than-life heroes may not be heroes at all. With far-reaching implications spread over 50 years, My Name Was Mickey Mantle takes the listener on an engaging and sometimes unbelievable journey from the sandlots of Binghamton, New York, and ending on the hallowed grounds of the Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown. ©2018 Black Rose Writing (P)2018 Beacon Audiobooks

Through the Eyes of Death

Language : English
Gender : Male
Accent : American-General American
Vocal Style : Authoritative
Performance Notes
Publisher's Summary Through the Eyes of Death approaches the murder mystery genre from both the perspective of the protagonist and through the eyes and mind of a madman. The story is about people who believe that with enough money and a total lack of scruples, you can get away with murder. Heroes, real heroes, seldom want to save the day. They didn't start out thinking they would save the girl, take down the bad guy, and get it all done before breakfast. Those heroes are for the movies or cheesy mystery novels. That isn't Ben Simeon. This small-town cop had already fought his battles while serving his country. He already won his medals and no longer wanted to play the part. He longed for peace and quiet. He longed for his wife and daughter to be home when he got there. So many times he wished for these wonderful parts of his past. But they were gone. He would never again see his beautiful wife or hold his precious child. That was the past. That is what made this man a hero. His family. If he couldn't have them, he just wanted to be left alone to do his job. Fortune makes a hero. And whether he liked it or not, Detective Benjamin Simeon would once again be forced to take up the badge of honor and fight until order was restored. Or die trying. ©2015 Lannie C. In the Heat of the Summer: The New York Riots of 1964 and the War on Crime (Politics and Culture in Modern America)

Category : History
Language : English
Gender : Male
Accent : American-General American
Vocal Style : Authoritative
Performance Notes
Publisher's Summary On the morning of July 16, 1964, a white police officer in New York City shot and killed a black teenager, James Powell, across the street from the high school where he was attending summer classes. Two nights later, a peaceful demonstration in Central Harlem degenerated into violent protests. During the next week, thousands of rioters looted stores from Brooklyn to Rochester and pelted police with bottles and rocks. In the symbolic and historic heart of black America, the Harlem Riot of 1964, as most called it, highlighted a new dynamic in the racial politics of the nation. The first "long, hot summer" of the 60s had arrived. In this gripping narrative of a pivotal moment, Michael W. Flamm draws on personal interviews and delves into the archives to move briskly from the streets of New York, where black activists like Bayard Rustin tried in vain to restore peace, to the corridors of the White House, where President Lyndon Johnson struggled to contain the fallout from the crisis and defeat Republican challenger Barry Goldwater, who had made "crime in the streets" a centerpiece of his campaign. In the Heat of the Summer spotlights the extraordinary drama of a single week when peaceful protests and violent unrest intersected. Jaws meets Das Boot! In the dead of night the U-616 - a Type VIIB U-boat patrolling the British mainland in the early years of World War II - rescues a solitary survivor from a sunken ship. His story is so outlandish as to be unbelievable: a colossal shark - far too large even to be a great white - hunting them for days before savaging straight through their hull and sinking them down into the ocean. Captain August Krauser is skeptical of the man’s story, but as the U-616 continues its patrol, he is forced to admit that the danger lurking in the water is very real. At Death's Door: End of Life Stories from the Bedside

Category : Science & Technology
Language : English
Gender : Male
Accent : American-General American
Vocal Style : Authoritative
Performance Notes
Publisher's Summary At Death’s Door: End of Life Stories from the Bedside tells the powerful story of Sebastian Sepulveda’s experiences in working with patients at the end of their lives. In some cases, death came quickly, after the patient was first diagnosed with a terminal condition and entered the hospital. In other cases, patients had a long, progressive illness that got increasingly worse over the months or years until they were in their final days. In some cases, patients were able to fight off death for many years. Hard decisions are often made - whether to resuscitate or not, whether to choose hospice or not, who makes the decisions when a patient cannot, and whose decision to follow when several family members are involved in decision making. Written from the perspective of a medical doctor from years of experience, this personal approach to the end of life explores the many options available to patients and their families and reveals how real people have come to those decisions, and how they play out. With insight and sensitivity, Sepulveda offers families an important window into how life can end with compassion, care, control, and dignity. At Death’s Door features over 50 stories drawn from Sepulveda’s experience as a doctor dealing with these patients and families. As states debate the legality of assisted suicide and other end-of-life rights, real people make real decisions every day regarding end of life. Their stories come to life here, and listeners with similar concerns will find relief, comfort, and company as they face these decisions themselves. ©2017 Rowman & Littlefield Publishers (P)2017 Beacon Audiobooks

Publisher's Summary "Those bodies – the Roswell bodies – they weren't aliens." "One survived the crash." "A very highly classified experiment of the Army or Navy." "The planned use of propaganda." In early July 1947, something crashed outside of Roswell, New Mexico. It was not an alien spaceship, as so many believe. Rather, it was one of a handful of definitively military vehicles that were secretly test-flown in various parts of the Land of Enchantment. All of the flights ended in disaster, and particularly so for the people who were onboard the craft. Cover-stories concerning wrecked flying saucers and dead aliens were carefully created. The stories were then spread by those tasked with hiding the dark truth. The far more disturbing picture of what really happened near Roswell was cloaked for years. In fact, for decades. Until now... ©2016 Lisa Hagan Publishing (P)2017 Beacon Audiobooks

Greener Pastures

Category : Fiction

Performance Notes
Publisher's Summary In his striking debut collection, Greener Pastures, Michael Wehunt shows why he is a powerful new voice in horror and literary weird fiction. From the round-robin, found-footage nightmare of "October Film Haunt: Under the House," (selected for the year's best dark fantasy & horror) to the jazz-soaked "The Devil Under the Maison Blue," (selected for both the year's best dark fantasy & horror and year's best weird fiction), these beautifully crafted, emotionally resonant stories speak of the unknown encroaching upon the familiar, the inscrutable power of grief and desire, and the thinness between all our layers. Where nature rubs against small towns, in mountains and woods and bedrooms, here is strangeness seen through a poet's eye. They say there are always greener pastures. These stories consider the cost of that promise. ©2017 Apex Book Company (P)2017 Beacon Audiobooks

Language : English
Gender : Male
Accent : American-General American
Vocal Style : Motivational speaker

Publisher's Summary If you haven't heard of the Oola phenomenon yet, it's time to catch up. First, though, you need to understand what it is: Oola is that state of awesomeness you experience when your life is balanced and growing in all the key areas of health and well-being. It can be a noun or a verb. It can be a destination or a feeling. It can be as complex as a life growing and balanced in fitness, finance, family, field, faith, friends, and fun (the seven F's of Oola), or as simple as a sunset, a quiet book on the beach, or a special moment with a child. It is that place we all shoot for in life. That feeling we experience and that we celebrate in our successes along the way. In short, Oola is cool. Since the first copy of the original book, Oola: Find balance in an Unbalanced World, rolled off the presses a few years ago, the Oola lifestyle has become a literal phenomenon - a dynamic movement. OolaPalooza live events have been routinely sold out since the day they were started, and the Oola message has been taken to countless cities across America and to every major city in the world via nearly 1,000,000 Oola fans on social media. In their 1970s VW Surf bus, authors Troy Amdahl and Dave Braun have taken their OolaDream tour on the road, from coast-to-coast, collecting dreams and goals for a balanced life from people who adorn their vehicle with colorful Oola stickers. The OolaGuys know that women are the ultimate multitaskers. While a circus performer might spin seven plates in a single show, women spin seven plates - figuratively - every day. They not only juggle kids, family, and home life, they also juggle work responsibilities, customers and clients, make constant business decisions, handle professional events, and so many related activities that it's truly mind-boggling how much a woman can pack into a 24-hour day. ©2017 Oola LLC (P)2017 HCI

Born with autism, both Temple Grandin and Sean Barron now live famously successful social lives. However, their paths were quite different. Temple's logical mind controlled her social behavior. She interacted with many adults and other children, experiencing varied social situations. Logic informed her decision to obey social rules and avoid unpleasant consequences. Sean's emotions controlled his social behavior. Baffled by social rules, isolated and friendless, he made up his own, and applied them to others. When they inevitably broke his rules, he felt worthless and unloved. Both Temple and Sean ultimately came to terms with the social world and found their places in it. Whether you are a person with autism, a caregiver in the autism community, or just someone interested in an outsider view of society, their powerful stories will enthrall and enlighten you. ©2017 Temple Grandin and Sean Barron (P)2017 Future Horizons

Outlaws and Gunslingers

Performance Notes
Western outlaws terrorized the country during the late 1800s and early 1900s, robbing stagecoaches, banks, trains, and merchants. While they were fearsome, some became folk heroes and legends. The killer of Jesse James was vilified as a coward rather than as a hero. Billy the Kid's reputation outgrew his actual deeds. Legend says he killed 21 men in his 21-year life. The actual number was considerably less, maybe as few five. The west's fastest gun was "Jelly" Bryce, an FBI agent who could drop a coin from shoulder height and with the same hand, draw and shoot the coin before it reached his waist. ©2001 Alton Pryor (P)2017 Alton Pryor

Holistic Health Psychology Made Simple: 50 Psychological Habits You Must Break in Order to Lose Weight, Fight Disease and Reverse Aging

Category : Self Development
Language : English
Gender : Male
Accent : American-General American
Vocal Style : Straightforward
Performance Notes
Holistic Health Psychology Made Simple explains that the body does not control the mind. It can only affirm what the mind commands of it. Humans don't follow bad diets. The mind follows certain patterns, hence leaving the human body as nothing more than collateral damage in the process. Diet and exercise are both great ways of helping to fortify a healthy being. But neither of these two mundane solutions will ever supersede the power of the human psyche. To put the mind last as a solution in overcoming a physical ailment is indeed the foremost fundamental error that human beings commit during their quest for absolute wellness. If you desire a life full of vitality, you must rid your life of perfunctory thought processes. Holistic Health Psychology Made Simple discusses most of the common detrimental thought processes with relation to weight loss, diets, holistic healing, fighting disease, and reversing the aging process. ©2016 Urban Kryptonite Films Inc (P)2016 Urban Kryptonite Films Inc

This is me in all my glorious and pathetic splendor, I'm the result of treacherous fate. This life is something that I could have never guessed. A choice that I would never have made, a shotgun-suicide that I would have never committed. Who would ever choose to become a brainless zombie begging for brains? Most certainly I'm not a conformist and not the average Joe. When it comes to life, I like it hard and sexy all the way to hell even if it's for my own misfortune. Mother didn't raise no losers, if failure is my destiny then I shall majestically fail in such an epic way that no one will ever be able to forget my tragic ending. For this is my righteous destiny and my glorious descent to the fiery pits of hellish damnation. This most precarious choice has a name. Her name is Julia, the reason for all my predicaments and failures. No, I'm not even selling it short. Everything happened because of her! The she devil! But what if life could be different? And the Wind Blew Cold: The Story of an American POW in North Korea

Category : Bios & Memoirs
Language : English
Gender : Male
Accent : American-General American
Vocal Style : Storyteller
Performance Notes
A first-person account of the day-to-day struggles of an American held captive in North Korea.... October 6, 1951. Richard Bassett remembers the day vividly. That was the day his platoon ran into an ambush near Kumwha. During the firefight, many were wounded, four were killed, and Bassett, along with three others, was captured. During a month-long march to the POW camp, the Americans frequently came under friendly fire. Surviving the march paled in comparison to what the captured soldiers had to endure at Camp 5 Pyokdong. Frostbite, dysentery, jaundice, and mental breakdowns dwindled their numbers. Starvation and squalid conditions took their toll on Bassett during his 21-month incarceration. Yet he pledged to himself that if anyone were to walk out of this camp alive, it would be him. When Richard Bassett returned from Korea on convalescent leave in 1953, he set down his experiences in training, combat, and captivity. Then he put the memoir away and tried to forget. More than 20 years later, hospitalized for acute Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, he once again faced his personal demons. Expanding the memoir to include his postwar struggles with the US government and his own wounded psyche, the resulting comprehensive account is published here for the first time. Bassett captures in plain language and vivid detail those days of his captivity. He describes the shock of capture and ensuing the long march to Pyokdong, North Korea, Camp 5 on the Yellow River, where many prisoners died of untreated wounds, disease, hunger, paralyzing cold, and brutal mistreatment in the bitter winter of 1950-51. He recounts Chinese attempts to mentally break down prisoners in order to exploit them for propaganda. Bassett takes the listener through typical days in a prisoner's life, discussing food, clothing, shelter, and work; the struggle against unremitting boredom; religious, social, and recreational diversions; and even those moments of terror when all seemed lost. Bassett's story is important to general audiences and scholars alike because it has no counterpart in the literature of the Korean War. And the Wind Blew Cold refutes Cold War era propaganda that often unfairly characterized POWs as brainwashed victims or even traitors who lacked the grit that Americans expected of their brave sons. Bassett concludes his memoir with a candid discussion of the war's aftermath, his battle with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, harassment by a government eager to impugn the loyalty of repatriated POWs, and his long struggle with the Veterans Administration to receive compensation for enduring physical and mental scars. This book will fascinate anyone interested in the Korean War era, in captivity tales and in the resilience of the human spirit. Madam Millie: Bordellos from Silver City to Ketchikan

Category : Bios & Memoirs
Language : English
Gender : Male
Accent : American-General American
Vocal Style : Storyteller
Performance Notes
Mildred Clark Cusey was a whore, a madam, an entrepreneur, and above all, a survivor. The story of Silver City Millie, as she referred to herself, is the story of one woman's personal tragedies and triumphs as an orphan, a Harvey Girl waitress on the Santa Fe railroad, a prostitute with innumerable paramours, and a highly successful bordello businesswoman. Millie broke the mold in so many ways, and yet her life's story of survival was not unlike that of thousands of women who went west only to find that their most valuable assets were their physical beauty and their personality. Petite at five feet tall with piercing blue eyes, Millie captured men's attention by her very essence and her unmistakable joie de vivre. Born to Italian immigrant parents near Kansas City, she and her sister were orphaned early and separated from each other. Millie learned hard lessons on the streets, but she never gave up and she vowed to protect and support her ailing older sister. Caught in a domestic squabble in her foster home, Millie wound up in juvenile court with Harry Truman as her judge. This would be only the first of many brushes in her life with prominent politicians. When physicians diagnosed her sister with tuberculosis and recommended she move west to a Catholic home in Deming, New Mexico, Millie moved with her. Expenses ran high and after a brief stint waiting tables as a Harvey Girl, Millie found that her meager tips could easily be augmented by turning tricks. Thus, out of financial need and devotion to her sister, Mildred Cusey turned to a life of prostitution and a career at which she soon excelled and became both rich and famous. ©2002 Max Evans (P)2014 Redwood Audiobooks

Performance Notes
Audible Editor Reviews "This memoir-novel, skillfully presented by Marlin May, is reminiscent of S.E. Hinton's classic Outsiders…May energetically captures the Corrigan family as they recall immigrant stories and Irish history around their Thanksgiving table." (AudioFile) Publisher's Summary This audiobook concerns growing up in San Francisco's Mission District in an Irish American immigrant family that loves the Catholic Church, the Democratic Party, language, and Jameson's whiskey. The protagonist, Corrigan, comes of age during a time of great cultural changes in the U.S. His grandfather and father appreciate Bing Crosby but are not ready for Elvis. Corrigan's life is reflected through factual and fictional events, from early childhood in a rich Irish culture to the student riots at San Francisco State during the Vietnam War era. He continues a search for identity through drink, romantic love, theatre, and the written word. Many phases of development are examined, from Catholic education in the 50s to the icons that changed music and film: Presley, Dean, and Brando. The audiobook ends with its beginning, an examination of those forgotten Irish immigrants of another time. ©2011 Michael Corrigan (P)2013 Michael Corrigan

New Tricks for Old Dogs: 28 Laughable Lessons for People Too Stiff to Change or Bend or Move

Category : Comedy
Language : English
Gender : Male
Accent : American-General American
Vocal Style : Comedic/great comic timing
Performance Notes
With age comes wisdom. We become wise enough to realize that we can't do some of the things we did so well when we were young. The beloved comedian George Burns said it quite eloquently, "I can do anything at 80 that I could do when I was 20. That gives you an idea of what terrible shape I was in at 20." Self-help books offer solid, beneficial techniques, but they really only work for the young. Award-winning comedy writer Gene Perret reveals that more mature devotees must adjust these techniques, tweak them, alter them, and in some cases, ignore them completely. New Tricks for Old Dogs points out some of the flaws in the self-help philosophy. It tempers the advice with common sense. The battle cry of this volume is do it, but don't overdo it. Sometimes, after we reach a certain age, the best exercise program is a good, brisk nap. ©2016 Gene Perret (P)2016 Gene Perret

The Agency: William Morris and the Hidden History of Show Business

Category : Arts & Entertainment
Language : English
Gender : Male
Accent : American-General American
Vocal Style : Straightforward
Performance Notes
For decades, hidden from the public eye, William Morris agents made the deals that determined the fate of stars, studios, and networks alike. Mae West, Frank Sinatra, Marilyn Monroe, Danny Thomas, Steve McQueen--the Morris Agency sold talent to anyone in the market for it, from the Hollywood studios to the mobsters who ran Vegas to the Madison Avenue admen who controlled television. While the clients took the spotlight, the agency operated behind the scenes, providing the grease that made show business what it's become. The story begins more than a century ago, when a fiery young immigrant named William Morris opened a vaudeville-booking office on New York's Fourteenth Street and went up against the trust that ruled the leading entertainment medium of the day. Led after Morris's death by the legendary Abe Lastfogel, a cherubic little man who treated agents and clients alike as family, the firm transformed the agent's image from garish flesh-peddler to smooth-talking professional. But when Lastfogel's successor brutally sacrificed his best friend--the man who'd brought Barry Diller and Michael Ovitz out of the mail room--William Morris gave birth to its own nemesis: Ovitz's new firm, CAA. Throughout the '80s and '90s, as the Morris Agency made, and lost, such stars as Mel Gibson, Julia Roberts, Kevin Costner and Tom Hanks, Ovitz's power grew inexorably as Morris's waned. Lulled by the phenomenal success of Bill Cosby and the upward spiral of the Beverly Hills real estate market, Morris's board failed to act as death and defection thinned its ranks. Finally, with its flagship motion-picture department on the brink of collapse, the board was faced with the stark reality of having to buy its way back into the business it had once owned. ©1995 Frank Rose (P)2013 Frank Rose

To untangle the knot of interlocking meanings of these painted words, logophile and mythologist Phil Cousineau begins each fascinating word entry with his own brief definition. He then fills it in with a tint of etymology and a smattering of quotes that show how the word is used, ending with a list of companion words. The words themselves range from commonplace - like "biscuit", a twice-baked cake for Roman soldiers - to loanwords including "chaparral", from the Basque shepherds who came to the American West; words from myths, such as hector; metamorphosis words, like "silly", which evolved from "holy" to "goofy" in a mere thousand years; and words well worthy of revival, such as "carrytale", a wandering storyteller. Whether old-fangled or brand new, all the words included in The Painted Word possess an ineffable quality that makes them luminous. ©2012 Cleis Press (P)2013 Cleis Press

Can these two polar opposites coincide with each other on a summer tour, making it out unscathed? This is a novella. ©2014 A.L. Wood (P)2015 A.L. Wood

Performance Notes
NARRATED UNDER THE NOM DE PLUME, DOMINICK MASTERS Professional bull rider Conner Raub hides a secret from the world: He's a dom. When he meets a submissive on tour who pulls at his dom tendencies, he fights to deny his true self, believing his colleagues will condemn his lifestyle. Jessica Talbot is new to the BDSM scene and the bull riding tour, but after seeing Conner come to the aid of a submissive being mistreated in a club, she sets out to have him for her own. After their first night together, she asks him to train her to submit. But he refuses, afraid to mix business with pleasure. Jessica isn't deterred. She'll do whatever it takes to make him realize he can have it all - a career, true love, and the BDSM lifestyle he craves. ©2012 Cassandra Carr (P)2015 Cassandra Carr

I have been acting on stage and for the camera and doing voiceover work for nearly 40 years. I have been critically acclaimed as a stage actor, and have been honored with 2 best supporting actor awards with OpenStage Theatre & Company, of which I've been a member for over 24 years. I often play the "bad guy," but can play the "goofy/good guy," too. I do several accents, including Irish, American South, American Midwest, British (having played Henry Higgins in "My Fair Lady), Italian, and to a smaller extent, some Indian/Middle Eastern. I worked for over 11 years for a company which produced radio and television commercials as well as web videos. I have my own in-home studio, and I use Mac OS X with Fast Track Solo and Pro Tools Express software. I am an expert at editing voice files, having done well over 7000 telephone interviews for testimonial radio commercials, editing them into usable sound bites, and writing announcer copy for those commercials. I've also edited long format sound files as well. I'm not bragging, but this is fun for me...and a challenge I enjoy. I also have a good deal of experience in casting and directing voiceover artists.
