A Christmas Carol

Category : Classics
Language : English
Gender : Male
Accent : British-Cockney
Vocal Style : Husky
Performance Notes
An excerpt from a recent production of A Christmas Carol. This features a rough-voiced Scrooge, a common London narrator (just a touch of the cockney), and a pompous Spirit of Christmas Present. Scrooge is recovering from his meeting with Past and is visited by the second spirit...

Dawn on the Rock Excerpt

Category : Kids
Language : English
Gender : Male
Accent : British-General British
Vocal Style : Comedic/great comic timing
Performance Notes
A forthcoming book aimed at the 10+ age group. A light, punchier, sillier read about a girl on her first trip to the moon.

Oliver Twist

Category : Classics
Language : English
Gender : Male
Accent : British-Cockney
Vocal Style : Melodramatic
Performance Notes
This is a conversation between Mr Bill Sykes and "The Jew", as Dickens insists on calling Fagin. By the way, if anyone ever fancies employing me to do Dickens in this style, I will love them forever. This is FUN!

The Stink - Excerpt One

Category : Teens
Language : English
Gender : Male
Accent : British-General British
Vocal Style : Comedic/great comic timing
Performance Notes
The opening few pages from one of my own books, The Stink is a comedy set in North London in the 1970s. Read in an unashamedly London voice, with the kind of flat comedy that I grew up with. A bit silly.

Dirt - Excerpt One

Category : Science Fiction & Fantasy
Language : English
Gender : Male
Accent : British-Cockney
Vocal Style : Enthusiastic/Excited
Performance Notes
Weasel and Farthing witness the sale of young slaves at the market. Features a strong market-trader character wooing the buyers with a story.

The Cowardly Duke

Category : Science Fiction & Fantasy
Language : English
Gender : Male
Accent : British-BBC English
Vocal Style : Storyteller
Performance Notes
A story lifted from my book Dirt, this is the ancient tale of Duke Hathersage. In this rendition, I read it in a classical-actor style. A good older voice that might suit period and historical novels.

The Stink - Excerpt Two

Category : Teens
Language : English
Gender : Male
Accent : British-Cockney
Vocal Style : Upbeat
Performance Notes
Although The Stink is a comedy, not all of it is funny. In this emotionally charged excerpt, Smell discovers that his brother is gay.

Dirt - Excerpt Two

Category : Science Fiction & Fantasy
Language : English
Gender : Male
Accent : British-General British
Vocal Style : Straightforward
Performance Notes
A gentle conversation between Barkles and Farthing, sitting on a wall drinking beer. A relaxed read with a neutral narrator and London character accents. A little bit of light humour.

Hunting Dragons - Poem

Category : Drama & Poetry
Language : English
Gender : Male
Accent : British-Cockney
Vocal Style : Husky
Performance Notes
A gentle poem about childhood and loneliness, and finding a friend. Read in a deep, soft, London accent.

I am an older, character voice, born and brought up in North London. My voice (to steal something from someone else) could be described as "gravel lined with velvet," the velvet/gravel ratio is variable. I go from generic London without a strong accent, through to Cockney and East End. I can cover some generic regional accents and am particularly fond of extreme Dickensian character voices, perfect for historical pieces where you want to give your work an edge of fun. I can also do an old-famous-classical-actor voice as shown in one of the samples. I am a storyteller at heart and hope to bring that to your production, whether that is fiction or non-fiction. My voice is mid to deep with a hint of smokiness (though I gave up smoking years back). When it warms up it gets a nice rumble. If you want a lot of rumble, get me to record when I am tired. I have been in the recording and production industry for nearly 40 years working as a sound engineer and producer as well as an occasional voiceover and composer. In recent years, I have been working on music and writing books, but am now extending my offering to encompass my long experience in top-end voice production and work on Audiobooks as a Narrator/Producer. For the moment I am only producing myself. I have my own recording facility with Neumann mics, a voice booth and recording/editing using Cubase Pro and iZoptope RX 6. My service will normally include full editing (I would not release any voice tracks un-edited!) and mastering ready for ACX upload. For more details, see the narrator section of my website. I am also an experienced composer working in many genres.
My credits over nearly 40 years are a huge list, so here is just a flavour of those years time. Recent voice work: The Violin Man's Legacy by Seumas Gallacher - An edgy thriller. A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens - read in a deep, warm, London accent. Dirt - Fantasy Series currently in production (I am also the author). The Young of the Plains - audiobook on YouTube Old Stuff: Various commercials over the years as both a voice over and singer. Worked on three series of Sherlock Holmes plays for Radio with Roy Marsden and John Moffat. Directed and recorded an audiobook of Wuthering Heights with Jenny Agutter, Recorded and directed Inspector Morse short stories with the late, great Anton Rodgers. Recorded and directed poetry with Glenda Jackson. Recorded and produced thousands of commercials, working with the best voice actors in the UK. Produced hundreds of multi-language versions of both corporate and drama video/tv productions. Recorded and/or produced comedy recordings for radio with Barry Cryer, Ian Lavender, Tony Robinson, Graham Norton, Simon Callow, Isla Blair, Eleanor Bron, and many others. Worked as the Sound Designer on many productions. Animation recordings with Kate Winslett, Martin Landau, Rhys Ifans, Warwick Davis, Joss Ackland, and more... Various voice acting roles on animations over the years. And a lot more which I am losing track of...
