Hanna Crafts’ fictional novel is set on a Southern Plantation in the U.S. South around the late 1800s. These characters include Hanna, narrator and the lady in waiting to the plantation mistress, the young mistress, Lizzy, cousin of the plantation master, and the mysterious Mr. Trapp, the unwelcomed houseguest. The mail arrives and brings an ominous cloud to the evening. The mistress is stressed by the letter and knows it's of interest to Mr. Trapp. He uses the arrival of the letter to confront the mistress about the terms of “their agreement.” Mr. Trapp and the mistress have maintained a secret agreement for some time. The agreement is to ensure Mr. Trapp's silence on the matter that could destroy the mistress and her household. She will do almost anything to keep the secret. With the arrival of the letter, Mr. Trapp feels the young mistress may go back on her promise putting him in the position to expose her secret.
