The Catbird Seat

Category : Comedy
Language : English
Gender : Female
Accent : American-New York
Vocal Style : Female narrating a male part
Performance Notes
James Thurber's The Catbird Seat is a short story about a mild-mannered accountant who's driven to "rub out" Mrs. Barrows, the Special Advisor to the firm's president, before she can reorganize his beloved filing department. In this excerpt, Mr. Martin is mentally reviewing his evidence against her. (He recalls the words of three different characters in their voices.)

I have a well-modulated and pleasant speaking voice, a bit deeper than one traditionally finds in women (this is particularly effective for doing male voices), but I have an excellent vocal range and can also do higher-pitched voices. I have a very sympathetic ear, so dialects and mimicry are easy for me. I enjoy experimenting to find just the right voice for a character, and I especially love creating character voices when reading children's literature. I'm quite good at holding the attention of both children and adults with my interpretive skills when reading aloud. My voice is very soothing and well-suited to self-help books and similar non-fiction work. Although I can read quickly, I find that most people appreciate it when you slow down enough to let them fully savor the writer's words and absorb the meaning of the content. I am excellent at cold readings and can produce high quality results quickly. I am very respectful of the writer’s creation and always approach it with a deep sense of responsibility and a desire to make the author say, “That’s it! That’s exactly what I was imagining!”
I haven't performed on stage in almost 20 years, so I'm aware that I'm at a disadvantage when competing with actors who have more recent experience. However, I haven't lost my ability to analyze a scene or characters, to build a scene to its natural climax, to bring life to the written word, or to move my audience. Although I have not attempted to work professionally in the last few decades, I’ve utilized my skills and training while reading aloud almost daily to children and adults, bringing a great deal of pleasure to both. I am currently working on narrating a children’s novel. I've been accepted by the Silverton Agency as a new voice talent.
