Wreck of the Carl D. You may have heard of the Edmund Fitzgerald, an ore carrier that sunk in Lake Superior in November, 1975, an occasion made famous by singer/songwriter Gordon Lightfoot. But in the earlier November of 1958, a similar tragedy occurred in Lake Michigan, when the Carl D. Bradley, at the time one of the largest ore-carrying ships plying the Great Lakes, snapped in two during a storm on it's last voyage of the season. The primary difference between the Carl D. and the Edmund Fitzgerald sinkings is that two of the Carl D. crewmembers survived a 15-hour ordeal on a life raft in gale-force winds and 25-foot waves.
